Winter Car Care Checklist for Georgian Roads
Winter driving conditions in Georgia can change within a single trip — city ice in Tbilisi one moment, real snow on a mountain pass the next. Preparing the car before the cold arrives beats dealing with it stuck on the side of the road.
Tires first
Check tread depth, and switch to winter tires if you regularly drive toward Gudauri, Bakuriani, or any mountain pass. Cold air also drops tire pressure — worth checking it separately from the tread.
Battery and fluids
Cold weather is what finally reveals a weakening battery — better to have it tested than to find out at a cold start. Check the coolant mix is rated for sub-zero temperatures, and switch to a wiper fluid that won't freeze in the reservoir.
Brakes and visibility
Wet and icy roads put more demand on brakes — worth having the pads checked before the first real freeze. Replace worn wiper blades and have your headlight alignment checked, since shorter days mean more driving in the dark.
- Tire tread ≥ 4mm, winter tires if you drive mountain roads
- Battery tested, terminals clean
- Coolant mixed for sub-zero temperatures
- Wiper blades replaced, fluid rated to -20°C
- Brake pads checked before the first ice
